Project 31
I’m happy to report that Project 31 is finally complete! I wish it only took me 31 days to complete but it took me about 50 days. This is the first photo project I’ve completed so it’s better late than never. I’ve tried Project 365 in 2008 and 2009 and failed miserably. I think the furthest I got my first year was in the early 100s. In 2009, I attempted Project 50 but I only got through 25 days. Can you tell I have commitment issues when it comes to “artistic” projects? I would like to try Project 365 again but only when I’m done with school and living on my own.
I could have completed this project in 31 days but I didn’t like forcing it. Some days my life isn’t glamorous; I know it’s hard to believe! There were some days I didn’t leave the house and I didn’t want to put up a crappy picture just to have one to put up. I did that a couple days early on and decided I’d rather take my time…even if it takes two months!
There were days when it felt like pulling teeth getting my camera out to take a picture. The picture of my niece and the beer sampler shot were one of those days. I’m so glad I did “tough” it out because they’re both my favorite photos from the project.
My friend Kathy has been trying to talk me into doing a Project 52. Part of me thinks, it’s only a photo a week for a year but part of me doesn’t want to do it. It all stems back to the commitment issues I mentioned above. For now I’m going to enjoy this accomplishment of finally completing a photo project. …and hey! I have a new picture of myself out of this project!

If we’re friends on facebook and/or twitter you’ve already seen this but one of my photos has been published in a magazine! Over spring break while I was visiting Andy in NJ, I received a message on flickr from someone at Food Network. They were wanting to use my photo Casino Pier in a special feature they were doing but needed a larger photo. Since I was out of town, I didn’t have my external hard drive with me, and I wouldn’t be able to get back to them before their deadline. I ignored the message and the several messages that followed up until the deadline.
Until this morning I had forgotten all about that. I bought the June ’11 issue of Food Network’s magazine a couple weeks ago because I was attracted to the cover. I had already flipped through the magazine but this morning a photo from Seaside Heights caught my attention. “Hey, that looks like my photo!” then I noticed over in the right margin my name was credited for the photo. How exciting!
I’ve had other photos show up on other websites but I’ve never seen my photo in print before. What a nice way to start the day!

I’m back from my trip visiting Andy in Jersey. I should add the word unfortunately to the previous sentence. I always have a blast when I visit him so it’s always difficult leaving. I still wish I would have forced him into my car when I left Tuesday morning. ;-P

From the photos I took while visiting (insert shock and awe!) it appears that all we did was eat. That wouldn’t be a stretch to say as we both love good food… But we did walk around quite a bit so we’ll pretend that evens things out.

Thursday we had lunch at Teak on the Hudson where we had sushi and headed to Queens. The trip to Queens was short-lived because I didn’t realize I was still tired from the drive there and not getting very much sleep the day of my drive. I would like to go back though…
Wet bikes @ Rutgers
Friday we met up with my flickr friends Kasia and Elizabeth at Rutgers University. It started out being a rainy day, fortunately the rain stopped as we were walking around campus. We ended up stopping for ice cream at Thomas Sweet and later had dinner at Old Man Rafferty’s. Oh, and we took pictures at the statue on campus that supposedly whistles at virgins…?!

Saturday we had lunch at Nanoosh (a hummus bar) in Manhattan, walked around most of the day, and had dinner at Rosa Mexicano. There we had two pomegranate margaritas (each lol), guacamole, and our entree. Hey, we did a lot of walking!. My sister asked me what my favorite meal was, it was Rosa Mexicano hands down, it’s always Rosa Mexicano unless we go to Cafe Matisse! I’d probably make a special trip back to NY just to go to either places. Then again it wouldn’t take much of an excuse to make me want to go back.

Sunday we went to his friend Susan’s wedding. It was a jewish wedding, I have never been to one, so that was interesting in itself. Looking back, the wedding wasn’t too different from other weddings I’ve been to aside from a few traditions here and there. The reception was a lot of fun considering I didn’t really know anyone except a few of his friends that I had met last year at his birthday party. All of which are always so nice and welcoming!
Monday we planned to have an uneventful day, and it turned out to be a good idea, but it went by too quickly! I think we left his apartment only to grab something for lunch and dinner. Lunch was at a Ruthie’s; a bbq and pizza joint. We both had bbq but I’d love to go back and try the pizza. Dinner was pizza but from a different place. Heh-heh.

Even though we spent 5 full days together it seems like it went by too fast. Fortunately, I am going back for my birthday in ten short weeks so it’s not so bad. I can’t wait!
As a result of this trip I hit 250,000 miles as I was coming home and I realized I like taking pictures of food! That’s good right?

I’ve been saying a lot of goodbyes lately it seems, and as you’ve seen from my previous post I’m getting rid of my Holga camera. I sent off my last three rolls of film to Dwayne’s Photo in Kansas because their prices were pretty unbeatable. For three rolls (and shipping) it was right at $25 and I had my film back within 7-10 days. Prices in Seattle were pretty expensive and getting to the semi-local shop (an hour away) before they closed was always a hassle. You might give Dwayne’s a try if there’s not a local business nearby that develops 120 film.
The one thing I don’t like about the Holga is the photos are always hit or miss. Out of 36 photos I’ve found four that actually stood out. I guess the same can be said about digital, but with digital you see the results right away and you know whether or not you should keep shooting. One roll of film that I used at the Seattle gay pride parade was ruined because one of the buttons was switched to bulb mode. It was something I should have paid attention to but didn’t.
These are a few examples of what happens when the holga is left in bulb mode when it isn’t needed. Nice, huh? :-O All in all, it’s been fun having a Holga and it’s a good conversation starter but definitely not reliable.

I’m currently selling my Holga CMY (Multicolor) CFN camera on eBay, if you’re interested follow this link for the auction. It’s served me well but I don’t use it enough to justify keeping it. I think I’ve only used about 5 or 6 rolls of film during its time with me. Hopefully it will go to a nice home; maybe even yours! :-)

This past weekend my brother Roy and I flew to San Francisco. This is my first time visiting San Francisco or California for that matter. I would have liked to visit “the mothership” in Cupertino but it was going to be about 2.5 hours by bus and we really didn’t have the time.
We scoured what seemed like most of San Francisco on our first day. My god is San Francisco hilly! I was warned about this before the trip but I didn’t realize how out of shape I am – well OK I know I’m out of shape but it was a big reminder! We went through Chinatown then North Beach for a boat ride around the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. At times the boat ride seemed more like a roller coaster because the waves were pretty big at one point causing the boat to bounce up and down. As a result, the last 15 minutes of the ride I was feeling pretty nauseous. I don’t see how people do cruises for several days, maybe with a larger boat you don’t feel a lot of the bumps. Later in the day we went to the Castro and I saw where Harvey Milk’s camera shop used to be and my brother pointed out several areas where memorable moments happened. I’m not too familiar with Harvey Milk outside of what I’ve seen in the film “Milk” but he seemed to have made an impact on Roy.
While we were in San Francisco we also went to the California Academy of Sciences with one of Roy’s friends and his wife. They had a rain forest exhibit going on that was pretty cool or shall I say humid! ;-) It didn’t seem like we were there very long before they made the announcement they were closing. We didn’t really plan that one out too well. That evening we went to an italian restaurant called Steps of Rome. Earlier in the week I got my hair cut and my stylist recommended going there and getting tiramisu for dessert. He was practically salivating when he was talking about the restaurant so I thought it would be a good idea. The pasta dish I had was just OK but he was right about the tiramisu; it was heavenly.
The trip seemed to go by really quick but then again most weekends do go by pretty fast. And as always I wish that I would’ve taken more pictures. I’m glad I had the experience of going to California, but I don’t think it’d be my first choice for vacation. A lot of people – which I’m surprised that’s even a factor given that I really like NYC. Then again it is NYC.
