San Francisco

San Francisco

Cory has been talking about taking me to San Francisco for most of our relationship and we finally had a chance to get away a few weekends ago. I have been to San Francisco and he’s been but we haven’t been together. Since I knew we were going to San Francisco, and I knew buying the lens I wanted (24-105mm f/4L) was out of the question given how often I take pictures with my DSLR, Cory opted to rent the lens I wanted as a birthday gift. I haven’t rented a lens before and it seemed like LensRentals.com had the best reviews online. I think the price was pretty fair, and you can rent for however long you’d like, and the lens was in perfect condition. I would definitely use them again if I’m in the market for a rental. We visited Apple’s HQs in Cupertino and walked and drove around San Francisco. My favorite stops on this trip were Chinatown and Lands End. Here are some of my favorite photos from the trip. Final verdict: Going somewhere new and exploring one of my hobbies (photography) again certainly helped to get my creative juices flowing. In my opinion, this was […]

Chicago

Chicago

A couple weekends ago we visited Chicago for my birthday. I’ve only visited Chicago once before (aside from passing through the airport), and remembered enjoying it aside from the fact we visited on SPRING BREAK, which is really still Winter for Chicago. We didn’t do a whole lot of research for this trip, which is unusual for both of us, and so the bulk of our first day there was walking around aimlessly. That weekend I didn’t want to research every little thing we did before going; especially food. The restaurants we picked were not picked out for their excellent Yelp reviews. It was interesting going into a restaurant and not knowing what to expect or what the food might look like. One interesting meal we had was in the back of a jewelry store. It was a very small, very out of place, Mediterranean restaurant that was pretty good. The other restaurants we visited were pretty meh but that’s OK. We did randomly stumble upon Shake Shack! We had already eaten lunch an hour or so ahead of that so we got dessert; Cory got a peanut butter shake and I got the Shack Attack. It was just OK. […]

American Sign Museum

American Sign Museum

Last weekend Cory and I went to Cincinnati for a low-key mini vacation. We haven’t been anywhere since Europe and we were needing to get away and do little-to-nothing. One of the few plans we had while in Cincinnati was to use a Groupon he bought for the American Sign Museum. I’m so glad he found it because I wouldn’t have went otherwise . . . and it was amazing! It was a tiny museum; like three rooms, but it was nicely done and very photo-worthy. Don’t believe me? Check out some of these photos: Or in color? Hmmm… While we were there I was inspired to take some photos that I could later edit with the Party Party App from the amazing people over at A Beautiful Mess and I think they turned out well for what they are. I really hate to admit it but my iPhone is replacing my DSLR but I’ll never part with it. It’s so easy to do fun things (quickly) with the iPhone and it’s super portable. I took some photos with my DSLR while at the sign museum, but from what I could see on my tiny screen I liked the photos […]

Day tripping: Indianapolis

Day tripping: Indianapolis

Yesterday Cory and I road tripped about two-hours to Indianapolis and part of the day exploring. We mapped out some sights we’d like to see and by the end of the of trip, we visited most of those places. It was nice because we so rarely have the same days off and we weren’t rushing; which is always nice. We first started out at the Love sculpture at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. I would’ve liked to visited the Museum of Art, but alas, they’re closed on Mondays. :-\ We did have a nice time photographing the sculpture and walking around the grounds. Next, we headed to White Rive State Park where I wanted to walk the canal. We didn’t realize just how humid it was going to be and didn’t dress for it. We walked around for a while, had good conversations, and then decided we were getting hungry. This was a very good practice for our trip to Europe next month, because I realized my camera bag is too heavy, we both need to wear lighter clothes for extensive walking. As much as we both wanted to look cute yesterday, we both would’ve preferred to be comfortable by […]

Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon has been on my bucket list of places to see before I die for a long time. Cory, too, has also longed to go, and so it seemed like a good choice for our first vacation together. We were leaving a few days after my finals so I didn’t have a lot of time to think about the trip, what we would do, etc. We were just going for a weekend so we really couldn’t plan much anyway. I knew I wanted to see the Watchtower and of course the canyon. I was feeling a bit nervous because this was my first trip with a significant other. Cory and I get along well and haven’t argued about anything. So my worry was “what if he decides after this trip he doesn’t want to be with me anymore?!” You know the usual irrational thoughts. We left on a Saturday morning; we had to be up at 4AM to get to the airport in time and catch our plane. Knowing we had to be up that early I didn’t sleep well and woke up way before the alarm. We made it to Phoenix by 9am their time. As we […]

The Food Tour

I’m back from my trip visiting Andy in Jersey. I should add the word unfortunately to the previous sentence. I always have a blast when I visit him so it’s always difficult leaving. I still wish I would have forced him into my car when I left Tuesday morning. ;-P Andy’s Lychee Saketini from Teak From the photos I took while visiting (insert shock and awe!) it appears that all we did was eat. That wouldn’t be a stretch to say as we both love good food… But we did walk around quite a bit so we’ll pretend that evens things out. Pretty view from a rest stop in MD or PA Wednesday night when I arrived we had a (delicious) turkish meal from a little place near his apartment that we’ve been to a few times and called it an early night. Andy (probably) checking in to foursquare Thursday we had lunch at Teak on the Hudson where we had sushi and headed to Queens. The trip to Queens was short-lived because I didn’t realize I was still tired from the drive there and not getting very much sleep the day of my drive. I would like to go […]

Plans

I finished up the Spring semester and I couldn’t be happier. This has been an exhausting semester and a complete test of my patience at times. Fortunately, I have a whole month free between now and the beginning of the summer semester. I have a few ideas for things I’d like to do during this time, but I know if I do everything that I want I’ll kick myself for not taking it easy come June. It’s difficult to find the balance between completing tasks and also making time for rest. Here are a few things I want to do while on break… Read With my tax return I decided to splurge on one thing: a Kindle. Unfortunately, with my schedule I haven’t been able to read a lot and so I’ll be happy to break it in! I have three books waiting to be finished, as well as books I’ve been adding to my goodreads to-read shelf. Take photos Every now and then I reminisce through my Flickr feed to times when I took a lot of photos. I hate that my camera bag sits in my closet literally collecting dust. I’m planning to take at least one photo […]

Goodbye Seattle!

About 12 hours from now I’m going to be headed back east to Kentucky. I’m not a nervous flyer but I know as soon as I get to Sea-Tac I’ll be anxious for the flight to be over with. My flight is around midnight, with a layover in Houston around 5AM, and I should be arriving in Louisville around 10:45AM assuming there are no delays. Hopefully I can sleep through most of the flight. I have my iPhone filled with several tv shows and new music to listen to. I’ll have that if nothing else. I’ve really enjoyed the time that I’ve spent with my brother, I haven’t been able to spend this much time with him since I was a kid. I’m really surprised we haven’t got into more arguments than we did given the fact we’re getting into arguments when he comes to KY for a few days. When I say “we” it’s mostly “me” starting the arguments. That’s what happens when you have similar personalities, confined spaces, and love one another. There’s definitely things I won’t miss like waking up to horns honking outside of my bedroom window at 4 freakin’ AM, gun shots, the traffic, etc. […]

San Francisco

If you can’t view this slideshow click here for photos. This past weekend my brother Roy and I flew to San Francisco. This is my first time visiting San Francisco or California for that matter. I would have liked to visit “the mothership” in Cupertino but it was going to be about 2.5 hours by bus and we really didn’t have the time. We scoured what seemed like most of San Francisco on our first day. My god is San Francisco hilly! I was warned about this before the trip but I didn’t realize how out of shape I am – well OK I know I’m out of shape but it was a big reminder! We went through Chinatown then North Beach for a boat ride around the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. At times the boat ride seemed more like a roller coaster because the waves were pretty big at one point causing the boat to bounce up and down. As a result, the last 15 minutes of the ride I was feeling pretty nauseous. I don’t see how people do cruises for several days, maybe with a larger boat you don’t feel a lot of the bumps. Later […]

Live from Seattle

On Friday I will have been in Seattle a whole week. The days I’ve been here have flown by, probably because my friends and I have filled it with lots of sightseeing. My first two nights I was here I found myself quite overwhelmed by being in a new place, and I’ll be honest at times I wanted my Mom. Back home I’m used to the comforts of a lot of space from other people, so it felt odd being surrounded by people. It still feels odd but I seem to be coping a lot better. My friends are heading back home tomorrow and it’s inevitable that I’ll probably freak out again. Heh-heh. Speaking of freaking out, Tuesday was our first time using public transportation by ourselves and it was a complete disaster. It took a good portion of the day switching from bus to bus to get to the Space Needle. Finally we got there and I don’t think any of really got to enjoy it from all of the walking we did during the day – trying to get there. Today was a lot better. My friends stayed at a hotel last night and are doing so tonight. […]
